There are two very good versions of the Odyssey and the Illiad by Rosemary Sutcliffe: The Wanderings of Odysseus and Black Ships Before Troy.
I confess I've read very few of the books on that list. What was I reading as a kid? Biographies, mysteries, ghost stories (Alfred Hitchcock anthologies were a favorite), and historical fiction. I did read a few children's classics, like Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, Treasure Island, The Hobbit, etc, but not many of the ones on your list, I'm afraid. My daughter has read more of them than I have.
